My Air Force JROTC unit just had our annual change of command and awards night. This year, I have been serving as our support squadron SNCO. I assisted my Officer in Command (OIC) with leading admin, logistics, and protocol. My new position is the OIC of Operations Squadron. In this role I will be leading our field days, Thanksgiving day food drives, Christmas charity events, and all of the flight commanders and sergeants. This is a very big role, and while I am nervous, I am excited to see what I can do to make our unit better. I have already been working with the former operations OIC for spring field day this Friday.
At the ceremony, I also received the American Legion General Military Excellence Award. This national award is given to one cadet each year who demonstrates outstanding qualities in scholastic and military leadership, discipline, character, and citizenship. In my past two years of being with the unit, I have also received the American Veterans award and the National Sojourners award. Our unit took a big hit after the pandemic and I’m so proud of how much we’ve grown and achieved within the time I’ve been a cadet. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next year!
One of my favorite parts of our unit is the dual enrollment opportunities with Embry-Riddle. I took the intro to airspace and drones courses (AS120/220) last year. In that class, we learned the principles of aeronautics and got certified in flying drones with hands-on experience. I’m currently enrolled in the ground school class (AS121).Our unit has 4 flight simulators that we use to get as close to real flight as we can. We just finished learning the content and have now started the month of review for the FAA written exam, which we will be taking on May 3rd while visiting Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Campus!
