When I first introduced myself to the Flying Musicians Association, I was a musician working toward a longtime dream of becoming a pilot. I mentioned that I was starting this journey a little later in life, and I was excited to connect with others who shared my love for both music and aviation.

Well, I have an update!

On October 9, at 46 years old, I passed my private pilot checkride and earned my Private Pilot Certificate!

Getting here has been quite a journey. Learning to fly has challenged me in ways I didn’t expect, but it’s been an incredible experience to work toward something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. There’s something pretty special about finally pursuing a dream you’ve carried with you for years.

One of the things I’ve appreciated about the FMA is the people. Since I joined, Don has reached out, offered advice, asked me questions about what I was learning, and checked in along the way. Those conversations and that encouragement have meant a lot to me as I’ve worked toward this goal. It’s nice to know there are people in the aviation community who take an interest in seeing others succeed.

For those who don’t know me, I’m also a drummer and guitarist on my church’s worship team. Music has been a big part of my life for years, and I’m grateful to have found a community that brings these two passions together.

So, what’s next?

I’m already preparing to begin my instrument training! I know it’s going to be a whole new challenge, but I’m looking forward to continuing to learn, improving my skills, and seeing where this journey takes me.

If you’re a musician thinking about learning to fly, regardless of your age or how long you’ve been putting it off, I hope you’ll take that first step. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin. You just have to be willing to start.

I’m thankful to be part of the Flying Musicians Association and look forward to getting to know more of you, hearing your stories, and sharing more of my own journey along the way.
